Design and Technology is an inspiring, valuable and practical subject. In our school, Design and Technology enables children to take risks and become more resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable individuals. Children are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present design technology, its uses and its effectiveness, whilst gaining an understanding of the distinctive and diverse needs of our community and the wider world. Design and Technology provides a foundation for children to flourish beyond our school community. It empowers children to actively contribute to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of themselves, their community and their nation; equipping children with the skills to serve others and the wider community.
In our school, Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Children recognise and value differences in people and communities, strive to create purposeful products and feel a sense of pride in their achievements. Design and Technology ignites passion for learning and sparks curiosity as children acquire powerful knowledge through exploratory and practical first-hand experience. They learn specific skills through teaching focuses as well as through opportunities to safely explore. Design and Technology encourages the development of resilience, perseverance, determination and adaptability. Where possible, we link work to the other STEM subjects: science, engineering and maths.
Design and Technology inspires children to flourish into creative, reflective and adaptive individuals. It provides a foundation for children to shine light in the community. Through purposeful opportunities to research and learn through doing, Design and Technology embeds a foundation of knowledge, skill and understanding. It equips children with the confidence, creativity and ability to support the wider community. Design and Technology reveals the ever changing world in which we live and encourages reflection upon how we adapt and improve to respond to society needs. It encourages our children to learn the crucial skills of adapting, overcoming and improving whilst highlighting what we now have in society is a reflection of previous individuals desire to improve in order to meet society wants and needs.
