At St Francis of Assisi Church of England Primary School, we are designers and technologists! Design and technology teaching and learning provides a foundation for children to flourish beyond our school community; encouraging our children to shine light into the wider world. It is an inspiring, valuable and practical subject. The Design and Technology curriculum has been carefully crafted so that our children access all the statutory outcomes of the Design and Technology National Curriculum and in addition to this, the natural links with other STEM subjects. For pupils in EYFS, the Statutory Framework for the EYFS is followed. It enables children to take risks and become more resourceful, creative and reflective individuals. Through purposeful opportunities to research and learn, we strive to embed a foundation of knowledge, skills and understanding of the distinctive and diverse needs of our community and beyond. Design and Technology teaching and learning in our school equips children with confidence, imagination and ability. Our children are given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present technology, its uses and its effectiveness. We want them to learn about the designers, architects and engineers who have shaped our world. Design and Technology encourages the development of resilience, perseverance, determination and adaptability and will contribute to our children’s personal development in resilience, creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection.
In our school, Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. We encourage children to experiment, invent and create their own designs in textiles, mechanical systems, structures, cooking and nutrition and electrical systems, with a focus on important issues such as sustainability and enterprise that reflect our rapidly changing world. Children recognise and value differences in people and communities, strive to create purposeful products and feel a sense of pride in their achievements. Children are encouraged to learn the crucial skills of adapting, overcoming and improving. Design and Technology ignites passion for learning and sparks curiosity as children acquire powerful knowledge through exploratory and practical first-hand experience.
